Writer’s Guidelines

StudentFilmmakers Magazine and StudentFilmmakers.com welcomes and publishes both new and experienced writers for both the magazine and website. We publish a wide range of authors and professionals in the industry. You do not have to be a published writer to have an article appear in the magazine or website.

Types of Articles We Publish:

How-to’s; educational articles sharing tips and techniques related to filmmaking, videomaking, and animation. Topics within the categories and sub-categories of development, pre-production, production, post production, distribution, and film business.

We look for high level educational content, how-to articles, and case studies for high level filmmakers, videomakers, and storytellers.

Needs: Articles related to aspects of cinematography, lighting, directing, shooting, editing, videography, screenwriting, and other topics and sub-topics related to development, pre-production, production, and post production.

Word Count:
Article length varies, depending on content. Average word count per article is 300 to 500 words for shorter pieces, and up to 1500 words for longer pieces.

Byline, Bio & Headshot:
Contributing Writers whose works are published in the magazine receive a byline, short bio (up to 70 words), and photo in the magazine. Send your full articles, along with your name, contact information, byline, 70-word bio, and headshot.

Publication Terms:
By submitting your articles for consideration in the magazine and/or website, you agree to publication terms. You grant full rights of your articles to StudentFilmmakers Magazine and StudentFilmmakers.com for printing or reprinting in the magazine, websites including behind paywalls in our membership section, back issues, special issues, archives, or digital versions of the magazine.

Photos and Production Stills:
Above 300 dpi; larger than 1260 pixels in width, and to be considered for the Cover, larger than 2625 pixels in width. Photo credits and short descriptions for captions. TIFF, EPS, or JPEG files accepted.
