I have seen the work of many photographers and I am wondering how they manage to create such amazing compositions. I have tried to watch tutorials on youtube and recreate some great ideas…the result was far from theirs even though I have followed every step.

Is photography a skill you can learn? Can I become a good photographer if I practice long enough? Or it is a talent you need to be born with?

      Hi Amy!

There are talented people in any industry, not just photography. Don’t get discouraged! 🙂

You can study photography and you can learn the basics. You can become a better photographer by taking photos. Try working for a photographer and learn as much as possible from that person. It helps to have a mentor.

I did not know that I can get a mentor in Photography. Where can I find a mentor?

In my opinion is both: art and talent.

Art when are you taking your pictures you need eye and frame. That’s when your

      talents come from

I am self taught. I have studied photography for years to become a better photographer. It is a skill that you can develop but you do need a bit of talent

The problem isn’t whether photography is a talent or a skill, the problem is whether you like photography that much or not. How many hours are you willing to put into taking photos to become a better photographer? Because you see, there is a saying: you can become good at anything if you put 10,000 hours into that something. 🙂

Thank you, Lili! I am willing to put 10,000 and even more hours if I know that I have a chance of becomming very good at this. However, if I don’t have a chance even with those 10,000 hours then I should find something else. This is why I was asking if it is a skill or a talent 😀

Before AI, I thought anything requires a bit of talent. Now, I learned that anyone can do anything. If an algorithm can create amazing art, so can we, humans.

I have always loved photography but never took it seriously until three years ago. Jan 2020 I bought my first “real” camera and enrolled in some photography courses in college. At the age of 57. I struggled at first trying to figure out the exposure triangle and how to operate my camera effectively. Then COVID happened and school was shut down. I lived alone and it was lonely. I began to go out everyday and take pictures of random stuff. Then the more I did my passion and my skills grew rapidly by simply shooting everyday. Before long I realized it’s my niche. I have had some great success in a very short amount of time. That said, for me it’s a combination of skill, talent, and passion that has made my craft what it is today. I’ve been blessed.

In this context, I believe I am a part of “the rest of us” category. Thank you for sharing the saying from your country with me, I feel a bit better now. I was a bit demotivated
