#FlashbackFriday #FBF  Do you remember our Community Spotlight with Adam Rench?

Adam Rench is a producer and director of short films in Spring Grove, Illinois. He produced and DP’ed the first film he worked on which was named, Clementine (2005), then went onto produce and direct his first privately funded short film, So, A Guy Walks Into A Bar (2005). He is now in the post production stages of his latest short film, Causality Scheme.

Adam says, “I wanted to try an action film first, so I did Clementine, then wanted to do a comedy, so I shot Guy Walks Into A Bar, then wanted to do a mystery so I chose to film, Causality Scheme. I want to try my hand at all the genres to see which one settles with me the best.”

Adam and his production company are in the pre-production stages of two films. The first is a short fantasy film written by Adam currently titled, Beauty. The second is a feature film that is currently unnamed, and being adapted from a novel into screenplay format.

A quick tip related to an aspect of producing:

“The best tip I can give for producing is pre-produce!! By far the most important thing for production is a good pre-production stage. I have [in the past] underestimated the value of planning ahead,… And I paid dearly for it. I cannot stress enough that planning your production is by far one of the most important things to do.”

Favorite filmmaking tool:

“My favorite tool in filmmaking is my editing station. In my experience of doing my own editing, I have found that it makes me such a better director. My editing station is the non-biased sign post that smacks me upside the head when I have screwed up on filming. It doesn’t lie to me or tell me that I ‘did a good job’ or tell me ‘well that was a nice try, Adam.’ The editing station is a way to really learn how to make a film. If you completely messed up, it will tell you; if you did a good job, it will also tell you; and during those special moments, it will also reveal the touches of genius you have inside of you. Those moments of genius are the unplanned gems you get when you had no intention of filming them. Whether that special something is a touch of luck or whatever you want to call it, it is there for the editor to dig up. When I edit my own work, I get to feel it and know it so well that to me it feels like I crammed for an exam every day for 3 weeks. I will never forget what I have learned, whereas I forget what I capture so quickly during filming that I have to watch the dailies to actually remember what we just shot only a few hours earlier! By far, the editing station is the best tool for me to learn the craft.”
