Community Spotlight with Nelson Jenstad

Composer, Songwriter, and Writer. Santa Ana, California.

#ThrowbackThursday #TBT  Do you remember our Community Spotlight with Nelson Jenstad?

Work:
“Mostly songwriting, composing and recording. I produce and master my material in my home studio, mostly.”

Inspiration:
“Well-written stories are the best inspiration to be found in my opinion. A story, even abstract can be found in many places – of course the movie screen, but also in a Pink Floyd album, or in the lunch room at work. A powerful story leads to ‘meaning.’ This is what life is all about – discovering ways we can find meaning, somehow, in our lives. You can’t just find it being handed to you, it is something found on the inside. A good story provides conditions to make a discovery like that.”

Biggest Challenge:
“Having done a little film work as screen talent [for director Bob Pece], I can see how monumental a task it is to coordinate all the pieces. The cool thing is that most film artists are so into the work, it still is more like ‘playing’ than what one might call ‘work’. When a person gets stuck in a mindset and really needs to hear the director, I feel is the biggest challenge for many.”

Solution:
“Get some air, a little time, and re-approach with a fresh brain.”

Favorite Tool:
“Being mainly a music composer, Wave Lab, the mixing and mastering software is huge but easier than even more overwhelming Pro Tools. It’s almost too much to deal with the time, and who can hear the subtle sonic differences? Almost no one.”

Favorite Technique:
“One thing I like to do is find quality amidst quantity. I have the luxury of creating lots of whole works, and selecting the best of them to build an album with. It may be akin to taking a lot of ‘takes’ while filming, and then the long editing down the best of the whole lot. The thing is, it’s not very practical, so rehearsal and hopefully decent talent can save a lot of long editing hours. There is a balance to it, like an experienced chef knows the kitchen inside-out and saves time.”
