Community Spotlight with Chad Bell

Student. Filmmaker. Florida, United States.

#FlashbackFriday #FBF  Do you remember our Community Spotlight with Chad Bell?

Two things have always interested Chad Bell even as a child: outer space and filmmaking. “I was on a path to become an astronaut when life threw me a curve ball… It was in my teenage years that I became interested in filmmaking and storytelling. So I began to carry a camera with me everywhere starting with a Super 8, then on to a Hi-8 Digital Camcorder, then MiniDV.”

Most of Chad’s screenplays are about space and adventures beyond our atmosphere. “It’s far more safer to be an astronaut in a movie. Throughout college I just began to work on the craft itself and network with others with dreams and talents like mine.”

Current projects:

“I am editing and finishing up a digital project called Overexposed, my senior thesis at University of Tampa which I am looking to make as a feature after I
graduate. I am also getting my newly formed company Advent Films off the ground.”

Recently completed:

“Witches By A. Loon, a comical look at witches being punished through a piece of art made by a town lunatic. It was for the Arts Honors Society for my school.”

Indie filmmaking tip:

“Plan, Plan, Plan. Planning your production is key to having the production become a success.”

On digital video:

“I love it. However, I do love film for its gorgeous aesthetic, but when you are on a crunch and your budget is maybe not what you would like for it to be, digital video makes your dollars stretch in many ways, as well as making the time of the production more accessible without waiting for processing. But I don’t believe film is going away as yet. You still have to use the principles of film to properly shoot with digital video.”

Advice:

“Dream, dream, dream. Don’t allow anyone to say you can’t do something, just make it happen and keep dreaming. Work on your craft constantly. When
discouragement comes around, just use your dreams as the high octane fuel it is and just re-energize yourself instead of falling to discouragement.”
