Community Spotlight with Andrew Firestone

Camera Operator, Editor, Graphic Design Artist

#ThrowbackThursday #TBT  Do you remember our Community Spotlight with Andrew Firestone?

“I am currently a student at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho. I am also a freelance camera operator and editor. Usually, I am just the editor for a project. I also shoot and edit weddings and commercials and other advertising materials for businesses in the area.”

Andrew Firestone, Film StudentBiggest Challenge: “I was directing a commercial for the Ford dealership. There was a shot of a car and an actor in the desert. The actor walked from the front of the car to the back, with the camera following, and then, the camera trucked back to the front, with the car between the actor and the camera. As the camera passed the cabin of the car, the car and actor were ‘moved’ to the front of the dealership and a second actor was to walk up to the first. Would have been easy if I had a big enough green screen. But I didn’t have one available to me.”

Solution:“The solution, it was quite simple once my dolly op and I sat down and talked for a bit. Take as many shots at varying speeds at both locations and hope that two of them match up. Luckily enough, it was the first shot from each location that matched perfectly.”

Favorite Tool: “My favorite tool would be a steadicam (Clipper 24). It allows me the freedom for almost anything. It lets me get exactly what the director wants. It is a fun and difficult task but hard to find a rig to rent.”

Favorite Technique: “My favorite technique would be to take advantage of the space around me. Move the camera, use the lenses available to you. Experiment on set if time allows but don’t do it if the director knows exactly what he wants.”

Inspiration: “I usually spend time searching the internet for things I like and save them for later reference. I have a whole hard drive full of inspirational materials. When I am given a project to work on I go back through similar videos or designs and try to use elements or concepts I like to come up with something new.”
