#FlashbackFriday #FBF  Do you remember our Community Spotlight with Jason Outenreath ?

Jason Outenreath is a sophomore at Oberlin College, majoring in Cinema Studies and Film Production. “While I primarily have been studying cinematography, I also have written and directed numerous short films over the years. In collaboration with my good friend Van Lam at Two Cut Films, we have worked on over fifteen projects together since 2002.”

Current Projects:
“I’m directing a short film, ‘Jean’s Postmodern Masterpiece.’ It follows the story of a cynical and depressed filmmaker, who after getting rejected from every prestigious film school in the country, sets out to make the next postmodern masterpiece. I’m also working on a short film that I co-wrote with fellow filmmaker Patrick Willems, entitled, ‘The Bishops Circle.’ The serial focuses on a former chess prodigy, and his unusual status and relationship to the underground chess league and The Bishops Circle. I’m also in early collaborations with Oberlin graduate Quentin Jones, who I plan on shooting several short films with during the month of January.”

Indie Tip:
“It’s important to work with reliable people who you can count on to be there for you. And always be prepared to take over as the director when things aren’t coming together from other people or departments. As the director, I’ve found it’s really important to be more proactive as opposed to reactive, although in the end you end up being both.”

On Technology:
“I think that there’s a lot of excitement and infatuation with film technology in general, and that it’s important to remember that technology doesn’t tell good stories alone. Personally, I’m excited to see where digital technology is taking the film industry. It makes filmmaking available to a lot of people. When I first started reading about all the equipment and technology available, I became obsessed with the technical side of things, and lost sight of the true goal of filmmaking: storytelling. Now I always remember that the tools I use can’t make a bad story great.”
