Thank You for Showing Up: A Heartfelt Note to Shane Stanley and Our Creative Community of Filmmakers and Creators

Celebrating the energy, insights, and collaboration that made our recent webinar a memorable success.

By Jody Michelle Solis

Occasionally we experience moments that serve as powerful reminders for our purpose and motivation. The live filmmaking webinar yesterday, “The Art of Scheduling: Creating Efficient Timelines for Film Shoots,” taught by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Shane Stanley and hosted by StudentFilmmakers.com, was one of those significant moments.

First and foremost, a deep and genuine thank you to Shane, who continues to give so generously of his time, experience, and insights. What makes Shane such a powerful voice in the world of filmmaking isn’t just his professional accomplishments—although there are plenty of those—it’s the heart behind his teaching. The stories he shares, the hard truths he doesn’t sugarcoat, and the practical tools he puts on the table come from real trenches. And it’s that honesty that turns a webinar into a masterclass.

I also want to give a big thank you to Publisher/Editor Kim Welch, who always asks the kind of questions that get right to the heart of what filmmakers need to know. Kim has this amazing ability to dig deeper, bringing out the essence of what we’re really talking about. His genuine curiosity and thoughtful approach make every conversation feel more personal and impactful. It’s clear he’s not just interested in the facts; he’s invested in making sure every filmmaker, no matter their level, walks away with something meaningful. His way of guiding the discussions truly adds another layer to the experience, turning it into something special.

A special shoutout to Swati Panda, Kevin Lawrence, Jamila Allston, Bliss Holloway and his dedicated classroom of film students, Robert Skwaryk, Steve Blanton, Ty Eckley, Chief, Yvette Sams, and all of you—both the regulars and those joining us for the first time. Even if your cameras were off and we couldn’t see you, your energy was still very much felt and appreciated.

A big thank you to our Online Community Director, Maura, for ensuring all registrants were properly signed up and for her ongoing support. I always look forward to her creative promos, which bring great energy to our community. Her dedication truly enhances everything we do.

The filmmakers, producers, directors, ADs, students, and creatives who participate with their questions and ideas while remaining open to growth make all this valuable work possible. Your participation turned the event from a standard online session into a dynamic conversation full of ideas. You demonstrated that learning thrives when real people share knowledge passionately in real-time moments.

You recounted your experiences with current project challenges while sharing how Shane’s insights brought you new clarity. Attendees reported that the webinar provided timely validation for instincts they were unsure about. There were plenty of laughs, bright moments of connection, and shared insights that made it feel like we were all in the same room—learning, growing, and having a genuinely great time together.

We also want to recognize something deeper: showing up is an act of courage. Both experienced professionals and newcomers demonstrate bravery when they choose to learn in public as well as question their approaches and analyze their successes and failures. The collective strength of our creative community stems from this very practice.

At Student Filmmakers we hold the view that education extends beyond mere information transmission to form meaningful relationships. Between mentor and student. Between peers. The educational journey bridges your present state with your envisioned destination. And what we saw during this webinar was exactly that: connection, curiosity, and commitment to the craft.

So thank you again. To Shane for his candor and care. We thank each participant for attending and sharing their perspectives. The silent listeners among us sent powerful energy that held equal importance. We see you. We appreciate you. We hope you left with something valuable.

What Our Community Had to Say

The energy in the (virtual) room didn’t end when the webinar wrapped. Your feedback reminded us why these gatherings matter so much. Here are just a few of the thoughtful, heartfelt, and fun messages we received from attendees:

Shane Stanley & Student Filmmakers brings it yet again! Invaluable real world craft from an established filmmaker. The stuff you don’t find in the books.”

“So glad I found Student Filmmakers. I have learned so much more about making films from them and Shane Stanley.”

“Excellent information from Shane, as always. As a longtime producer/writer/field director of broadcast news, entertainment, commercials, promos and corporate videos, I can tell you that preparation, i.e., scheduling, separates the pros from the amateurs…” —Tom Marshall

“This was a great webinar and it came at the perfect time for me. I’m AD on a short film right now and I’m frustrated about my planning suggestions not being listened to… It’s nice to hear someone confirm my belief that scheduling is important and that we shouldn’t skip that step.”

“This seminar was very helpful in how to deal with the ever changing conditions of film production and how to make use of that situation with planning ahead.”

“Great info, as usual!”

“Rocked it.”

“The best!”

“Yayness.”

“As always Shane was great. He has the gift to gab. Great job. Thank you.”
