The proud heritage of Gonzales, Texas is reflected in the people who are descendants
of those who buried the town cannon during the Texas Revolution and later dared
the Mexican army to "Come and Take it!" during the first skirmish
of the war. The town itself was rebuilt on ashes left by Santa Anna as he passed
through as he was chasing Sam Houston and the Texas army.
During 2001, members of Texas Documentary Photography Group trekked down Highway
183 from Austin to document the south Texas town of Gonzales. The history and
people of Gonzales made it a perfect subject for a photographic exhibition celebrating
this historic town. The photographers of the Texas Documentary Photography Group
have showcased both the traditions of Gonzales, though the cattle auctions,
football games, and daily living, as well as the legends of Gonzales, in a haunted
hotel, the historic jail, and the town square. The original work was showcased
in an exhibition entitled "Taking Gonzales: A Year in the Life of a Small
Texas Town." This exhibition contains both work from that first historic
exhibition plus new images highlighting the changing face of this classic Texas
town.
The Texas Documentary Photography Group is proud to work in conjunction with
the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum to showcase the proud heritage of
Gonzales, Texas in this exhibition.
