William DonarumaPRODUCTION TOUGH: "The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday" By
William Donaruma

A production day, week, month is a marathon, not a sprint and most of us have to carry a lot of stuff. Whether you move anvil cases of camera gear, sandbags, 10Ks or carry a clipboard you are on your feet for 12 hours a day. Those of us on the independent docs have to carry everything ourselves through airports and various landscapes and terrain. That’s no easy task to be physically and mentally prepared. Who has time for the gym versus the short walk to the craft service table? Well, you don’t need a gym and working out is just more work. Excited? Not so fast. I rarely go to a gym, except to meet a pal for some powerlifting on occasion, but I "train" regularly. And at 50, I need to be able to carry my gear, shoot hand-held and go on long hauls across some rough terrain all for the love of the job (and my wife).

Working relationship between director and DP"The Working Relationship Between the Director and
the DP" by
David Landau

Picking the Right DP

First, how does a director pick a DP? If the director is new and working for a seasoned producer, the producer will often select an experienced DP to make sure that the film gets made with all the needed elements. This is an insurance policy for the investors. It does not mean the DP will direct and neither the producer nor investors nor the DP will expect or want that. They hired the director for a reason. A good director will value having an experienced DP and rely on them, asking them questions and taking their advice. A good director is someone who takes as many good suggestions as he/she can get. If the new director is also the writer/producer, he/she will select their own DP after getting recommendations and looking at DP reels...

Ron Garcia, ASCConversation with Ron Garcia, ASC

"Exterior location: Will a particular scene be best shot in the morning or afternoon? What kind of weather is it going to be and will I have sun or overcast or both? What direction do I want to shoot for a scene first? Where will the sun be at the time of shooting? Do I use a soft diffusion over the actors if I’m going to be in direct sunlight, or start with having back light from the sun? What colors are the actors going to wear?"

Shooting in the dark"Shooting In The Dark While Doing What HD Does Best" By
Sherri Sheridan

#1) Easy To Move Around.
Try chasing a subject with an old film camera and you will find you cannot go very fast without expensive setups for dollies or tracks. I got the above moving redwood grove shot by sticking my HD camera out of my sunroof while driving to a last minute wedding shoot on a whim. Moving shots are exiting. Sunroofs are essential for digital filmmakers. Practice getting good car shots while driving but be careful not to hit anything.

#2) Hand Held Shots.
HD cameras have lots of technology for motion stabilizing to make hand held shots look smoother. Make sure your shots are not shaky or people will not want to watch your film.

#3) Low Light.
One of the strongest features of HD is the ability to shoot in dark or low light places. Film cameras need really elaborate lighting setups to get the shot looking good.
