Y-CAM at DCIFF: A New Home for the Next Generation of Filmmakers
The world of storytelling is changing — and young creators are leading the way. From films shot on a phone to animation drawn frame-by-frame at a bedroom desk, teens are showing that great stories don’t require permission — just opportunity.
To meet that moment, Y-CAM, a program of the DC Independent Film Forum (DCIFF), is launching a new chapter focused on empowering youth across the Mid-Atlantic with access, confidence, and real creative experience.
In 2026, Y-CAM is expanding its impact through:
- The Y-CAM Production Award (a brand-new $600 youth grant)
- The Y-CAM Film Festival & Call for Submissions
- Workshops, community programs, Discord groups, and student-led storytelling resources
Designed for storytellers ages 13–19, Y-CAM’s mission is simple: help young people build real skills, real portfolios, and real creative confidence.
New for 2026: The Y-CAM Production Award ($600 Youth Grants)
The centerpiece of this new chapter is the Y-CAM Production Award, a youth-focused grant program offering $600 to help teen creators bring their projects to life.
Awarded three times per year, the Production Award supports the exact kinds of costs that can make or break a project:
- Filming, editing, animation
- Software or equipment rentals
- Sound, lighting, and post-production costs
- Travel for filming
- Paying collaborators
- Festival submission fees
The award is intentionally accessible:
- Ages 13–19
- Open to individuals or teams
- Open to all Mid-Atlantic youth creators
- No fees
Whether students are finishing their first short film or building something completely new, the award exists to help them take the next step in their creative journey.
