"Me and my family are very proud to receive a Prix Italia, both for the dignity of the award, but also because it's an award from our home country. As the director, I'm pleased to see that my message – about how much our early experiences as a child, and the environment we grow up in, affects us in our future lives, and puts a limit to the choices we are able to make – is understood," the director Maria Kuhlberg says about winning Prix Italia. The director of "He Thinks He's the Best" has two uncles, Aldo and Carmine. They have been loggerheads since they were kids. In connection to the funeral of the directors grandfather Carmine tried to kill Aldo in a fight, but Vito – Maria Kuhlberg's grandfather and the uncles' father – intervened. Since that day the uncles have not spoken, but Maria wants them to meet and start talking again. In the documentary the director recreates the family's journey from poverty in southern Italy, to the new homeland Sweden, where several obstacles awaits. And she examines if her family, despite its violent social heritage, can become reconciled. "'He Thinks He's the Best' has its roots in Italy, and that makes this award very special. In the 40s Sweden offered people in the south of Italy work in the Swedish industry, and pledged them a better future in a new country. But as the documentary shows, it didn't turn out quite like that. I'm also pleased that this is a victory for the personal documentary that I have worked so hard for," producer Stina Gardell says.
