Female combat service members are a relatively new concept in the American Military and although our wives, sisters and daughters may be ready and willing to fight for their country, is the military ready and willing to accept them as equal members?

From data compiled by the 2012 Workplace and Gender Relations Survey of 22,792 Active Duty Service Members, the number of reported sexual assaults has had increased by 6% over 2011. (http://www.sapr.mil/index.php/annual-reports) All this while the military, the Department of Defense and Congress strongly defends a zero tolerance for Sexual Assault policy.

According to the US Department of Labor, one-third of women in America’s military claimed they were sexually harassed. That number is 500% higher than their male counterparts. (http://www.dol.gov/wb/trauma/traumaguide.htm)

But the looming question remains, how many assaults are not reported? Dr. Mic Hunter, author of the book "Honor Betrayed, Sexual Assault in the Military"; 80% of sexual assaults in the military are NOT reported. So how many women in our military are being sexually harassed, assaulted and traumatized and more importantly, why is the military not doing more to protect them?

“The Invisible War” addressed the issue of Military Sexual Assault, but what it did NOT do is answer the questions, “Why does it happen?” and “What can be done to prevent it?”

“Women of War” is a sometime tender, sometimes brutal look at the pride and pain that America’s female fighting force encounters when they choose to charge front and center in some of America’s most horrific battles.

Produced by the filmmakers of the award winning 2009 documentary “Who Will Stand,” “Women of War” is an in-depth study of the horrific issue of Military Sexual Assault among America’s bravest women.
