�It has been an extraordinary year for Canadian film and a particularly strong year for Quebec, with three of the five Best Motion Picture nominees hailing from that province,� comments Maria Topalovich, President and CEO of the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television. �We are thrilled with the exceptional films that are made in Canada each year and the caliber of talent this country produces. It is an honour to be able to recognize and celebrate these achievements with the Genie Awards.�

Two of the films nominated for Best Motion Picture are among last year�s most popular Canadian films, Les invasions barbares and La Grande s�duction and the third, La Face cach�e de la lune, comes from one of the country�s most acclaimed artists and filmmakers, Robert Lepage, who himself is up for his first performance Genie for the same film.

Owning Mahowny, also up for this year�s Best Picture Genie is based on the true crime story of the largest one-man bank fraud in Canadian history and features a nominated performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman. The fifth Best Motion Picture nominee, The Snow Walker tells a quintessential Canadian story based on a work from celebrated author Farley Mowat, �Walk Well My Brother� and is praised by critics across the country.

The 24th Annual Genie Awards will air Saturday, May 1st at 8:00pm ET on Citytv Toronto, Bravo!, Star!, MusiMax and Access and at 8:00pm PT on Citytv Vancouver. They will also air in Halifax at 9:00pm AT on ASN.
