Baltimore nonprofit seeks backers to fund orchestra program for at-risk youth.

(Baltimore, MD) The Greater Baltimore Youth Orchestra’s Bridges program, a music education non-profit based in Baltimore, MD announced today that it has launched a fundraising project to support orchestra for its disadvantaged string students. Connecting players from 7 schools across Baltimore City, this project would support orchestra rehearsals and a creative, collaborative concert in spring 2012.

Run under the auspices of the Greater Baltimore Youth Orchestra, the Bridges program is a broad-reaching outreach initiative that provides classical string instrument instruction to over 250 youth in seven different Baltimore City Public Schools. Students receive a loaned instrument free-of-charge as well as group classes on the violin, viola, cello, double bass, or harp. Since its inception in 2006, the program has also offered orchestral experiences for its students, where players from all seven schools get together to play in a large ensemble. These orchestral experiences build community amongst students, instilling in them life skills of teamwork, passion, cooperative learning, and responsibility.

However, the program must now raise more funds in order to continue supporting these orchestral experiences next semester. Bridges has thus created a fundraising campaign through Kickstarter.com, which aims to connect donors with creative ideas and projects.
