"Teaching Channel Presents" Provides an Innovative View Inside the Classroom With a Multi-Part Series, Premiering October 2 on Public Television

(New York) A new programming venture, "Teaching Channel Presents," a groundbreaking showcase of teachers and teaching across America, launched on October 2, 2011 across public television channels nationwide. Produced by Teaching Channel (Tch), the series highlights stories for educators, parents and those with a stake to improve the quality of education in the country's communities. It was announced by WNET New York Public Media.

Teaching Channel Presents, a one-hour weekly episodic magazine-style program premiering nationally on Sunday, October 2 at 11 a.m. ET on WLIW WORLD, and also premiering on Saturday, October 8th at 6 a.m. on THIRTEEN, 9 a.m. on WLIW21, and 1 p.m. on NJTV (check local listings), will include three to five inspiring teacher stories, with a mix of subject-matter for various student age-ranges to provide a varied viewing experience.

Teaching Channel Presents is a presentation of WLIW21 in association with WNET New York Public Media, one of America's most prolific and respected public media providers. For nearly 50 years, WNET has been producing and broadcasting national and local documentaries and arts programming to the New York community.

A multi-segment series all about teaching, Teaching Channel Presents is observational and character-driven, harnessing the best narrative while capturing compelling television in an easy-to-use format. Shot mostly inside the classroom, Teaching Channel Presents provides an entirely new and authentic dimension to professional development and teacher preparation, with a focus on all subjects and grade levels, pre-K-12.

Teaching Channel (Tch) is a comprehensive, multiplatform showcase of inspired and transformative teaching. In addition to this television series, the Tch website features more than 200 high-quality videos available for streaming or downloads accompanied by related lesson plans and resources, as well as a suite of sharing and annotation tools .

"Most of the time, teaching happens behind closed doors," said Alan Arkatov, CEO of Teaching Channel. "But we're opening those doors and in doing so, showing that great teaching can also make for great entertainment- for teachers and the general public."

Episode one of the television series takes the viewer inside America's classrooms with five segments that showcase inspiring and effective teaching practices. The premiere program includes a visit to: a multi-lingual classroom in Los Angeles where students learn and find their voice, 6th graders on a microscopic safari, a group of active 3rd graders grappling with the concept of graphing, a new teacher working to improve his practice with instructional coach Jim Knight, and a middle school math teacher who writes hip hop tunes to boost retention for his students.

WNET New York Public Media is distributing Teaching Channel Presents programming through The National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA), a professional association that serves public television licensees and educational entities in all 50 states, the U.S., Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.
