Allen Vizzutti will perform on campus April 11.

Student musicians at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) will have the opportunity to perform with a musician who has played with Chick Corea, Doc Severinsen, Chuck Mangione and Woody Herman. Trumpet player, composer, author and music educator Allen Vizzutti will be on campus Thursday, April 11, for a master class, a jazz clinic, and a performance with the award-winning UNCSA Jazz Ensemble.

The schedule includes:

·         Trumpet master class from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Watson Hall. The class is open to the public free of charge.

·         Jazz clinic from 4 to 6 p.m. in Room 167 of the School of Music Complex (the building that houses Watson Hall). The clinic is free and open to the public.

·         Performance as guest soloist with the UNCSA Jazz Ensemble, directed  by Ron Rudkin, at 7:30 p.m. in the Gerald Freedman Theatre of Performance Place. Tickets are $15 for adults and $13 for students and seniors. Visit www.uncsaevents.com for information.

Vizzutti performs and records both jazz and classical music. He has performed in 60 countries and every state in the nation, and has appeared as guest soloist with the Airmen Of Note, the Army Blues and Army Symphony Orchestra, Japan’s NHK Orchestra, the New Tokyo Philharmonic, the Budapest Radio Orchestra, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Leipzig Wind Symphony, the Kosei Wind Orchestra, and orchestras in Germany, Slovenia, St. Louis, Seattle, Rochester (N.Y.), Syracuse, Milwaukee, Buffalo, Phoenix, Edmonton, Vancouver and Winnipeg.

School of Music Dean Wade Weast said Vizzutti’s expertise in multiple musical idioms will resonate with students. “We offer training in both classical and jazz styles, and Allen Vizzutti is accomplished in both areas,” he said. “As an educator and as a musician, he embodies the versatility we want to develop in our students.”

Vizzutti has appeared on national television in Germany, Poland, England, Sweden, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Australia and the United States, and has performed as soloist at the Hollywood Bowl; Carnegie Hall; Newport Jazz Festival; Banff Center for the Performing Arts; Montreaux Jazz Festival; the Teton, Vail, Aspen and Breckenridge music festivals; the Charles Ives Center; and Lincoln Center in New York City.

Rudkin said it is an honor for the UNCSA Jazz Ensemble to perform with Vizzutti. “As a musician, you always seek opportunities to perform with those who are at the top of their field.  Allen Vizzutti brings a wealth of experience as a performer and a recording artist,” he said.

“The students and the audience are in for a real treat,” Rudkin added.

In addition to performing and recording, Vizzutti is a respected music educator. Currently artist in residence at the University of South Carolina, he has taught at the Eastman School of Music, the Banff Center for the Performing Arts, Kansas State University, Ohio State University, West Texas State University, the Skidmore Jazz Institute, and the Trompeten Akademie of Bremen, Germany. He maintains an extensive schedule of guest appearances at universities throughout North America, Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

“Allen Vizzutti is a phenomenal trumpet soloist with a long history of incredible performances with top groups,” said trumpet artist-faculty Judith Saxton, who chairs the UNCSA School of Music’s brass and percussion area.  “He is also an esteemed educator. Our students will be inspired and enriched by their experience with him.”

Vizzutti’s extensive treatise, “The Allen Vizzutti Trumpet Method,” and his “New Concepts for Trumpet” have become standard works for trumpet study worldwide. He has written jazz and classical books and play-along recordings. His student and recital compositions include solo pieces for flute, clarinet, saxophone, trombone, tuba, and harp, as well as works for chamber groups, wind ensemble, jazz ensemble, and symphony orchestra.

Vizzutti’s solo jazz recordings include Trumpet Summit and Skyrocket, and his classical CDs include The Emerald Concerto and Other Gems with the Budapest Radio Orchestra, Vizzutti Plays Vizzutti and Vizzutti and Soli On Tour. His High Class Brass is a unique classical and jazz blend co-produced, co-written and performed with fellow trumpet artist, composer and conductor, Jeff Tyzik along with a 90-piece studio orchestra. His discography also includes Baroque and Beyond, The Carnival of Venus and A Trumpeter’s Dream.

Vizzutti’s compositions have been premiered by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Budapest Radio Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic of London, the Nuremberg Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Syracuse Symphony, London Symphony, the renowned Summit Brass and others.

While growing up in Montana, Vizzutti was taught by his father, a self-taught musician. He attended the Eastman School of Music on full scholarship, earning a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music, a Performer’s Certificate, a chair in the Eastman Brass Quintet faculty ensemble, and the only Artist’s Diploma ever awarded a wind player in Eastman’s history.

While living in Los Angeles during the ‘80s, Vizzutti performed on more than 150 motion picture sound tracks, including BACK TO THE FUTURE and STAR TREK , as well as countless TV shows and commercials. He recorded with Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond, Chick Corea, the Commodores and Prince. His soaring sound can be heard on recent projects including the movies FURRY VENGEANCE, 40 DAYS AND 40 NIGHTS, UNFAITHFULLY YOURS, GRIDIRON GANG, SCARY MOVIE FOUR and THE HULK, and the video games MEDAL OF HONOR, RESISTANCE and HALO.

Vizzutti said his jazz clinic will be a fun, improvisational event, with demonstrations and discussion of myriad relevant topics.

Vizzutti’s residency is made possible in part by the Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts.

The UNCSA Jazz Ensemble has received widespread acclaim performing across the state and around the Southeast at jazz festivals, concert halls, public schools and other colleges each year. The band includes talented student musicians from the graduate, undergraduate, and high school divisions of the School of Music, who are natives of North Carolina, other states around the nation, and other countries around the world. The group's repertoire includes an extensive variety of big band jazz ranging from the traditional greats like Count Basie and Duke Ellington to Latin pieces and music in more contemporary styles.

As America’s first state-supported arts school, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts is a unique stand-alone public university of arts conservatories. With a high school component, UNCSA is a degree-granting institution that trains young people of talent in music, dance, drama, filmmaking, and design and production. Established by the N.C. General Assembly in 1963, the School of the Arts opened in Winston-Salem (“The City of Arts and Innovation”) in 1965 and became part of the University of North Carolina system in 1972.
