Mobile App for Documentary

Canadian Interactive agency Secret Location teams with Tribeca Film, the Drug Policy Alliance and the Tow Center for Digital Journalism to develop Tug of War on Drugs, the official mobile application for the documentary "How to Make Money Selling Drugs," from director Matthew Cooke and producers Adrian Grenier and Bert Marcus

Tug of War on Drugs is available now in the iTunes App Store, alongside film's theatrical release: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tug-of-war-on-drugs/id660765690

Launching June 27th 2013, mobile application Tug of War on Drugs gives audiences a chance to participate in the conversation started by the documentary "How to Make Money Selling Drugs," and discover what people really think about the war on drugs. By posing provocative questions around the debate raised in the film, and asking users to rate the impact of issues surrounding the war on drugs, the app creates awareness and conversation about the drug war. The app was developed in partnership with Toronto-based Interactive agency Secret Location, Tribeca Film, the Drug Policy Alliance, and the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University. The film, available on demand and through iTunes, begins its theatrical release in New York on June 26th and expands nationally starting on June 28th. A full list of theaters can be found at www.howtomakemoneysellingdrugs.com.

Built to raise awareness and gather feedback from a diverse group of users, this app features the latest breaking stories – updated daily – from the frontlines of the war on drugs. Users share their points of view by virtually voting on whether issues – from marijuana legalization in Colorado to Major League Baseball's fight against performance-enhancing drugs – are positive or negative, and what impact they have in the ongoing drug war. By pulling a virtual rope to where they stand on the issues, users lock in their opinions and immediately become part of a dynamic and ever-changing data visualization, offering a live look at shifting opinions around the war on drugs.

"With the film designed to call attention to the war on drugs and its surrounding controversy, we wanted to develop an app that gives audiences the ability to visualize public sentiment around the hottest debates," says James Milward, Secret Location Founder and Executive Producer. "Tug of War on Drugs will go a long way towards tracking the progress of the debate and offering a platform for valuable opinions to be heard."

A shockingly candid examination of how a street dealer can rise to cartel lord with relative ease, "How to Make Money Selling Drugs" is an insider's guide to the violent but extremely lucrative drug industry. Told from the perspective of former drug dealers, and featuring interviews with rights advocates Russell Simmons, Susan Sarandon, and David Simon (creator of "The Wire"), the film gives you the lessons you need to start your own drug empire while exposing the corruption behind the "war on drugs."

"We live in exciting times where technology has given audiences an opportunity to engage directly with our film," said producer Adrian Grenier. "It was important to take advantage of this trend with an app that extends the conversation started with How to Make Money Selling Drugs and provides its viewers a call to action at their fingertips."

"People who sell drugs are often stigmatized and subjected to draconian criminal penalties," said Ethan Nadelmann, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance. "This film and its accompanying app will further the current debate about alternatives to the failed war on drugs and its devastating effects on communities across the country and around the world."

From the unprecedented access to top‐ranking government officials granted to director Matthew Cooke and producers Bert Marcus and Adrian Grenier (HBO's Entourage), to the headline grabbing debates from international news sources, Tug of War on Drugs gives users an opportunity to dig deeper into how public policy and government drug enforcement have struggled to creatively adapt to and effectively deter the dealing of drugs.

Tug of War on Drugs is available for free mobile download in the iTunes App Store starting June 27th, 2013.
