For March, NYPV will be taking a turn toward documentary filmmaking. Many of us call ourselves "cinematographers." In the event Videography world, that designation usually means that we try to take our videos to the "next" level. We pay careful attention to framing shots, to lighting appropriately, and to editing in a way that tells a story. Some of us have even dabbled into short documentaries.

This month's presenter, Joe Lindquist, who is based in LA, offers to give us insight about what it takes to produce a feature-length documentary. Joe will tell us about his background, his schooling, and how he became a pro editor. He'll talk about how pacing and juxtaposition of shots helps to move a story. He'll also talk about how big a role collaboration between director and editor plays in the editing process.

We hope to come away with more understanding of what it takes to create a meaningful documentary, and also, how we might apply some of the concepts of documentary filmmaking to event Videography. To get the most out of the presentation, it would be a good idea for you to familiarize yourselves with Joe's biggest projects:

If Joe finds himself in NYC on March 26th, then he'll join us in person. If he's in LA or elsewhere, he'll join us via SKYPE.

Come to the March 26th meeting (6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.) prepared with any questions you have about the documentary filmmaking world!

About Joe Lindquist:

Joe Lindquist recently completed his 2nd feature documentary, deepsouth, tackling HIV/AIDs issues in present day America. His last documentary, Bombay Beach, premiered at the 2011 Berlin International Film Festival & won Best Documentary Feature at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival. He also received The James Lyon Editing Award, at the 2011 Woodstock Film Festival.

Also a director whose work has been awarded by the National Board of Review, Joe studied filmmaking at SUNY Purchase before moving to Los Angeles where he served as a Post-Production Coordinator for the final seasons of the FOX hit show, 24, starring Kiefer Sutherland.

Joe Lindquist's other editing credits include 2 narrative features which will be available later this year, the indie-comedy Worst Friends & Mischief Night, a horror film starring Malcolm McDowell.
