(Baltimore and Auckland, New Zealand) - Two short films by students from Media Design School (MDS), part of Laureate International Universities Centers of Excellence in Art and Design, are among the 50 semifinalists in the YouTube Your Film Festival. Dr Grordbort Presents: The Deadliest Game and Das Tub were selected from more than 15,000 submissions from more than 160 countries. Ten finalists will be chosen based on the number of votes received on the YouTube Your Film Festival site.

The chosen films will be screened at the Venice International Film Festival where finalists will compete for a $500,000 film grant to create a new work with director/producer Ridley Scott (Prometheus, Gladiator, Blade Runner and Alien) and actor Michael Fassbender (Prometheus, X-Men: First Class, Inglourious Basterds and 300). A grand prize jury of industry professionals, including Scott and Fassbender, will select the winner.

I am very proud of the work the students were able to pull off in such a short time span. Now we need to get the country and fans around the world to champion our films and get us to Venice! said Frances Valintine, chief executive of MDS.

Fellow film students from the Laureate International Universities network are supporting the MDS contestants. This is one of those instances where a network of highly regarded and prestigious universities in art and design exemplifies the power of a global education, said David S. Graves, chief executive officer of Laureate hospitality, art, architecture and design education. As the creative work of our MDS students is recognized in this prestigious competition, our students on five continents come together to rally and support their classmates in making their dreams and aspirations come true.

Both films were created by advanced students in the Media Design Schools 3D Animation & VFX program during the final stages of their qualification with minimal funding and the support of industry contacts. Dr Grordbort Presents: The Deadliest Game (2011) is based on the sci-fi world created by Greg Broadmore, senior concept artist at Weta Workshop. In the short film, the great hunter Lord Broadforce and his loyal manservant Caruthers have returned to Venus to gather more exotic wildlife specimens, much to the horror of reporter Miss Middlesworth. Das Tub (2010), starring Craig Hall (Outrageous Fortune, 30 Days of Night and King Kong), is a submarine drama in which the crew of a German U-boat find themselves on a collision course with objects stranger than they can fathom.

MDS asks all Dr. Grordbort fans and animation lovers to watch the films and vote. The deadline to vote is July 13; the finalists to compete in Venice will be announced on Aug. 1.
