Imagine a world-class film festival in a place where sports rule and arts get the equivalent of a Glee-style slushy in the face. One small city has set out to change all that by bringing a little culture to the place that, according toGlee, is supposed to be the destination for—not a departure from—the arts. In July of 2012, the Northwest Ohio Independent Film Festival is putting Lima, Ohio on the map. This time, by its own merit.

Now in its sophomore year, the Northwest Ohio Independent Film Festival has expanded and evolved into a three-day screening for feature-length films and shorts of all genres. "I wanted to create an event that would boost the local economy and highlight the talent that we have here in Lima, Ohio," says Executive Director Len Archibald. "We intend for this event to bring tourism dollars to the area from patrons globally."

The Festival already receives submissions from filmmakers across the United States, and all over the world, including countries such as France, Germany, The United Kingdom, Iran, New Zealand and others. A noteworthy past participant includes Ohio native Theodore James, whose works have screened at Sundance Film Festival.

The bar may be set high for Lima, just by nature of being the hometown of Glee. But this rustbelt city is determined to defy expectations. "Let's face it; no one expects a successful film festival thrive here," says Archibald. "But this is our home and we're proud of it. We want Lima to be recognized as a place where good things are happening. We won't let others say it can't be done, because we are doing it now."

The Northwest Ohio Independent Film Festival will be held July 6-8, 2012 at the Veterans Memorial Civic and Convention Center.
