Gekko Technology's new kelvin TILE, scheduled for introduction at IBC 2009 in September, is an LED-based lighting system employing a combination of red, green, blue, cyan, amber and white LED elements in a 16 x 15 matrix to generate high-quality full-spectrum white light specifically for film and video production. Unlike traditional luminaires, the colour temperature of kelvin TILE remains consistent throughout the full range of intensity variation.

"The kelvin TILE is a compact soft light giving directors or cameramen total control over colour temperature from 2,200 to 6,500 Kelvin with resets at 3,000 and 5,500 K," explains Gekko Technology founder and Managing Director David Amphlett. "It is a soft-light companion to the focusable Gekko kedo which we showed in prototype at the NAB 2009 convention. Being LED-based, it is highly robust, has a long working life and will not cook the performers. It is designed for general soft-light applications including concealment of wrinkles and shadows."

Measuring 301 x 301 x 99 mm (WHD), each kelvin TILE delivers up to 419 Lux at 5,500 K or 273 Lux at 3,000 K (both measured at 1 metre distance) with a power consumption of only 85 W. Beam angle is 108 degrees at 50 per cent intensity. The kelvin TILE can be supplied with an omni mount, single or double yoke mount, removable barndoors and kelvin PAINTBOX control software. Weight is 4.08 kg.

The kelvin TILE can be controlled locally, via DMX or using the kelvin PAINTBOX. In addition to complete calibrated control of white light, the kelvin PAINTBOX provides independent control of up to eight individual tiles, allowing lighting parameters to be saved, recalled and cloned. In RGB mode, the kelvin PAINTBOX provides access to a wide palette of colour lighting effects included washes, sweeps and strobes, as well as adjustable green biasing. Lighting parameters can be saved, recalled and cloned.
