Patricia Payne, Producer of the mini-series For The Term of His Natural Life, announces the international release of an interactive story app for the iPad, to be launched this week. Based on the book by Marcus Clarke, this groundbreaking interactive eBook app features a 300-page condensed version of the novel interspersed with segments of the highly-acclaimed international T.V. mini-series, presenting a seamless and gripping story-telling experience. The app bridges the gap between three forms of media: film, literature, and mobile devices.

“This novel has lasted over 130 years of publication and never been out of print” says the app’s creator, Patricia Payne, who also co-wrote the original mini-series based on Clarke’s novel. “The app platform provides a terrific opportunity to present this timeless tale for the tablet audience today. The user gets a truly engrossing experience interacting with the variety of multimedia forms.”

About the App
In addition to introducing Clarke’s novel in a condensed 300-page version for the international iPad audience, this release marks the advent of a new fusion: eBooks and mobile apps. The reader’s experience of this classic tale is enriched by over 40 interactive footnotes, 19 video notes, bios, and over 100 photos, maps, bonus, and historical documents. Progressing the story and weaving throughout the text are 18 video clips from the popular Australian mini-series, For the Term of His Natural Life, as well as clips from the original 1927 silent film based on the book.

It is different from other book apps because "ALL CONTENT" should be explored in linear experience as you enjoy the story. You are not supposed to skip the stories and assets as they are meant to fill the gaps in the book. Most ebooks just have extra content, versus our app makes everything a part of the story.

Additional Functionality

  •     easy book navigation with the ability to swipe, spread and pinch
  •     App tutorial, bookmarks, audio effects under text to create an immersive environment
  •     Icons for text notes, video notes, images and maps appear subtly at foot of page
  •     Dashboard presents image gallery, maps, individually controlled video notes, text notes, sound effects
  •     Settings include brightness, volume, fonts, and font size for easy reading

About the Story and Mini-series
For the Term of His Natural Life is the riveting adventure of Rufus Dawes who is falsely accused of murder in 19th century London. He is transported as a convict to the harsh penal settlement of Port Arthur in Tasmania, Australia. Despite his sentence, Rufus Dawes’s quest for freedom never dies.

Marcus Clarke’s classic tale of Australia’s convict past has been compared to such literary greats as Les Miserables and The Count of Monte Cristo, and has elements of Robinson Crusoe and Mutiny on the Bounty. But the book also acts as an historical document due to Clarke’s masterful and authentic references to the convict system.

The novel was adapted as a mini-series and has enjoyed international distribution since 1983. The series stars Anthony Perkins (most known for his performance in the Alfred Hitchcock film, Psycho), Patrick Macnee (most known as secret agent Steed for the long-running popular British series The Avengers), Samantha Eggar (most known for her performance in The Collector) and Colin Friels (recipient of numerous acting awards for film, TV, and stage, and most recently the Peter Finch Lifetime Achievement Award). It also stars Diane Cilento, Rod Mullinar, Robert Coleby, Susan Lyons, and features Glynn Nicholas, Damon Herriman, and a remarkable array of who’s who of fine Australian actors.)

For the Term of His Natural Life app is available on the app store for the iPad and retails for $13.99.
