Topic of the webinar:

Nature photography is a genre that many people find exciting for many different reasons: in addition to the difficulty of sighting animals in the first place, they're never co-operative; photographing them requires lots of patience, finely-honed technical skills, an expensive camera set-up and a lot of knowledge of the habits and behaviour of animals if one hopes to catch the best poses and expressions.

Parks and wildlife sanctuaries have become favourite places for amateur nature photographers to observe birds and animals, and in essence, to train and practise with their cameras.

However, the cliché attached to these places is that, given the proximity of animals already accustomed to the presence of humans, it's easy to get great shots. Nothing could be further from the truth: you certainly stand a better chance of spotting the animals, and being able to photograph them, but there's a gulf between that and getting impressive results. That you'll capture some images may be almost guaranteed, but getting good ones still won't be easy.

In addition, there is a widespread belief that there is no time to worry about anything other than capturing the animal in motion; amateurs often neglect other details of the shoot, like evaluating and composing the scene, observing backgrounds, managing lighting, picking camera angles and capturing good animal posture and poses.

This webinar will address these issues with a focus on shooting moving animals (mammals and birds) and discuss how, with time and practice, we can analyse our decisions as we shoot these subjects, and try to and make the good decisions flow more instinctively.

Biography

In life, as in photography, it's good to change point of view from wide-angle to zoom to standard 35mm vision.

But with two reminders: the first is to make sure you remove the lens cap; and the second is, to quote Talete, "the gods gave man two ears an one mouth so he could listen twice as much and speak half as much".

Claudia Rocchini was born in 1967 in Pavia, where she still lives, because it's the ideal city to come home to. She has three passions in life: writing, photography, and travel; and she's found a way to make them into a career, between highs and lows and brief interruptions.

She started young, as a political and foreign affairs journalist for national newspapers and periodicals, before moving across to the PR offices of various corporations and institutions, gaining considerable experience in national publishers and PR agencies. In the year 2000, she temporarily abandoned active and passive journalism, to dedicate herself to strategic marketing and communication for products and services in various managerial roles. She specialised in community management and social network communication, gradually returning towards photography and journalism.

She has a monthly column, "Io fotografa", in the Italian magazine Fotografia Reflex. She has nothing against photographing people and places, but her preference is for nature and animals. Her photographic approach is more empathetic than strictly documentary, and she often says that when she's taking photographs, her objective is to bring out the human side of animals, or the animal side of herself.

She is a communications consultant for businesses and brands, professionals and individuals, and although she is fully aware that, in today's image-driven society, appearance is often synonymous with substance, she would still like to believe that it is more important how people are talking about you, than that they talk about you at all costs.
Her aim, as a grown-up, is to go back to being a little girl.
