Director Alex Merkin's directorial debut opens on December 4th.

(Los Angeles, CA) The new independent thriller "Across The Hall" starring Brittany Murphy, Mike Vogel ("Cloverfield") and Danny Pino ("Cold Case") will premiere on December 1st and opens in New York and Los Angeles on December 4th. In New York it will be debuting at the City Cinemas, Village East Cinema and in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hills Laemmle Music Hall.

Its success is due to director Alex Merkin working tirelessly to ensure the film's modest budget made it on the screen. Merkin says, "For my first film I wanted to tell the type of story I grew up loving: ordinary people thrust into extraordinary circumstances, surrounded by a dense, textured world - one that lives and breathes on its own. A deeply visceral cinematic experience."

The film was shot on 35mm over a tight schedule of 17 days. On Universal Studio's famed Stage 28 ("Phantom Of The Opera," "The Birds") a degraded art deco hotel set was created to convey a world that is both out-of-time and eerily modern. The cinematic product is an environment that authentically translates the characters through antique interior design. Sharp direction, effortless performances, and a compelling score yields a rich, unexpected, and engaging film. As the last film to shoot on Universal Studios New York Street prior to the June 2008 fire, "Across The Hall" concludes in a manner that serendipitously pays homage to the beloved location.

In an economy where independent cinema is struggling and the distribution landscape is more difficult than ever, "Across The Hall's" arrival in theaters is a testament to the film's quality. From the time Merkin appeared on the scene with his short film, of the same title, eyes have been watching his talents.

Synopsis:

A quiet night takes a dangerous turn when Julian receives a frantic phone call from his best friend, Terry. Terry has followed his unfaithful fiancee, June to a seedy hotel on the other side of town and is staked out in the room across the hall; a bottle of whiskey in one hand and a revolver in the other.
