Thad Kahlow, CEO of BusinessOnline, is bringing the global movement to educate girls and change the world home to San Diego with a VIP private screening of 10x10’s much-anticipated film Girl Rising. Girl Rising is a film from non-profit 10x10 featuring the stories of 9 extraordinary girls from 9 countries who face – and overcome –staggering obstacles on the path to attain an education. Their stories are told by 9 celebrated writers and voiced by 9 renowned actresses including A-List Meryl Streep, Kerry Washington, Anne Hathaway, Salma Hayek, Alicia Keys, and others. Invited guests and press will be received at the Sanford Consortium on April 11, 2013 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. (2880 Torrey Pines Scenic Drive, La Jolla, CA 92037).

Martha Adams, the film’s Creative Director, will present opening remarks at the April 11 VIP screening in La Jolla. Both Mr. Kahlow and Ms. Adams have traveled the world and seen first-hand the experiences and struggles girls like those featured in Girl Rising face daily.

“The girls I met through my travel with 10x10 were strong, proud, confident and spirited in a way that was simply beyond their years,” said BusinessOnline CEO Thad Kahlow. “With education they see hope, a future and a glimmer of independence – they want to continue school more than anything –it’s the base for any other dream they may have. I realized if we gave these girls 1/10th the opportunity of those in the first world, they would do 10x more with it. This idea became my own 10x10 epiphany and is why I so strongly support 10x10 and Girl Rising.” Ms. Adams and Mr. Kahlow are both available for pre- and post-event interviews.

Research consistently proves educating and empowering girls breaks the cycle of generational poverty:

  • When 10% more of its girls go to school, a country's GDP increases an average of 3% (Council on Foreign Relations)
  • When female farmers are educated, crop yields rise. (Food Policy)
  • Educated mothers are 50% more likely to immunize their children. And when more girls are educated, a country's malnutrition and HIV rates decline. (UNGEI)
  • When women are educated and empowered, democracy is more likely to flourish and the conditions that promote extremism are reduced. (World Politics)

The film is distributed by CNN Films and Gathr.com, an on-demand distribution platform that allows those interested in the film to request a theatrical showing in their neighborhood. It has generated intense interest on Gathr, with many showings currently available here in San Diego and across the country.
