Being a great video or filmmaker involves more than just being able to create a visually pleasing and emotionally-engaging story. It also requires a deep understanding and exploration of the photographic elements of storytelling. Using these elements to create a strong narrative and effectively communicate a message is key to making an impactful film or video.

Photographic elements, such as composition, lighting, color, and movement, play a crucial role in crafting a story. Using these elements to your advantage can make the difference between a mediocre video and an unforgettable cinematic experience.

Composition is the foundation of a solid visual story. A good composition is essential to creating a sense of depth, emphasizing important elements, and guiding the viewer’s eye. Knowing how to use the Rule of Thirds and other classic composition techniques will help you create powerful images that evoke emotion and set the tone for your story.

Lighting is another essential element of video and filmmaking. It can create a specific mood and highlight certain details in your shots. Knowing when to use natural light and when to use artificial lighting will help enhance your visuals and make them stand out.

Additionally, movement is a part of a still photograph as much as it is an essential element of any motion picture story. Knowing how to capture movement and tell a story with a still shot will help create a more engaging experience for your viewers.

Understanding and exploring these photographic storytelling elements can give you the tools to create a compelling and impactful video or film. Learning about these elements and practicing using them will make you a better video or filmmaker. Learning to use these elements to tell a story will make your videos and films stand out from the rest and leave a lasting impression on your viewers.

All these elements are like pieces of the same puzzle. Together, they form a beautiful image.

In my experience I find it goes beyond have all the pieces of the equation. I find I capture my best work when I can open myself up and “feel” the energy or emotion of a subject whether it’s a person, place, or thing that makes the image that much stronger.
