    99% of people who start writing a script without at least a moderately detailed outline will never end up with something that's worth producing. I've read an awful lot of amateur scripts, and every single one has had a good idea at its heart and almost every single one has had huge structural problems which would take a lot of work to fix and which, generally, the writer doesn't want to fix because they're too tied to what they've written.     Using a consistent f-stop in lighting helps give the movie a certain visual consistency in terms of depth of field, sharpness, etc. F/4 is recommended by some only because a lot of 35mm zoom lenses have been limited in the past to around f/3.1 to f/4, though nowadays, many open up to f/2.8. Also, f/4 is around the sweet spot, optically, for many lenses -- most lenses tend to be their sharpest around two stops closed down from wide-open.
