On Music Composition:

“Sometimes we involuntarily get glimpses of a musical vision that pulls you to up to heaven, or drags you down to hell. Composing means taking responsibility and molding these fragments into a form that exposes their clouds, their rain, or their fire.”

On Music for Film:

“Tons of great music comes from film and tons of great films come from music. Sometimes the joining of different art forms can help form greater creations, and can enhance enjoyment and appreciation. That is why there is so much great music in great films.”

Biggest Challenge:

“In writing songs, the biggest challenge is to open up your soul enough to accept some inspiration. A big part of being an artist is to let yourself be sensitive enough to be moved by even the smallest of things.”

Solution for Challenge:

“Become a sponge. Soak up everything you can. Listen to more records, watch more films, read more books. The more you take in the bigger your arsenal of creativity gets.”

Favorite Technique:

“Sometimes I use a technique called no technique. Many times in trying to write or produce you get stuck on a lot of the same habits and go-to’s, and it gets bland. It sometimes helps to forget everything you know and to pretend that it’s your first time ever picking up your instrument. This lets the most raw, freeform ideas flow out.”

On Changing Technologies:

“Technology is constantly changing in the music industry. Musicians, producers, and engineers really need to keep up with it all in order to avoid being left behind. It is a bit consuming how a few months after you buy the latest, most innovative piece of gear a better one comes out. But the capabilities and ease that come with all the latest gear are all worth it.”

Favorite Tool:

“My favorite composing tool is my voice. It comes with me everywhere I go, and I have full control of its dynamics. I can write melodies in a whisper on the train or screaming in my car, and I can make beats walking down the street.”
