Indie film production company uses Kickstarter to help fund documentary on music maverick David Lowery.

Stellar Vision Media, LLC has launched a Kickstarter campaign to finish filming for Get Off This, a music documentary on David Lowery, singer/songwriter for Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker. The film follows the unconventional, and at times incendiary, journey of a self-proclaimed “outsider from the music business” who blazed the trail for today’s indie musicians.

The first CVB album was made in one weekend for $425, and built upon Lowery’s DIY philosophy, it soon became “the biggest cult band in the land” [MTV News]. Lowery’s subsequent band Cracker spawned several hits, most notably “Low,” which has become the unofficial anthem for the ‘90s alt-rock era.

While Lowery is best known for his music, he’s also the man who’s been single-handedly setting the music world ablaze with his campaign against online piracy. In what was the “biggest post of the year” [Digital Music News], Lowery attacks an NPR intern's blog post about paying for only 15 albums in her lifetime. In it, he bashes the founders of big name music streaming sites, and attacks the ethics of a new generation of listeners who are “unsticking it to the man and instead sticking it to the weirdo freak musicians.”

His provocative statements have elicited responses from his peers, including Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard (“[He] blows holes in every argument against buying music”) and Neil Young (“Piracy is the new radio”).

“After 25 years, I think that people will realize that, ‘Oh its not just “Take the Skinheads Bowling” […] or “Low”; there’s a lot more going on with this guy, and his music, and his bands,’” says Lowery.
