DC Shorts gives all entries feedback from the judges— a point which impressed MovieMaker Magazine to name DC Shorts as “one of 20 festivals worth an entry fee,” and “one of the leading film festivals.” DC Shorts turns the spotlight on truly independent short films, created by new and established filmmakers in an era when the art of filmmaking is opening to all. Films are selected from every genre for DC Shorts' competition. After each screening, filmmakers have the opportunity to speak to the audience as part of a moderated panel. Created in 2004 by award-winning filmmaker Jon Gann, DC Shorts is designed to focus on the filmmakers. “If you come to the event, DC Shorts will house and feed you, give you passes to every film, entry to every party – and the opportunity to meet more than 100 other filmmakers from around the globe,” Gann states. In 2008, DC Shorts reviewed more than 750 entries from around the globe. They selected 103 short films for screenings at 8 showcases during the competition weekend. More than 108 filmmakers from 8 countries, and over 2,600 people attended the screenings. First-time filmmaker, Wendy Motta, showcased her short documentary “Little Hands” says, “What a wonderful festival experience! DC Shortys really put on a great show, packed the house and treated the filmmakers to some great parties. I made some beautiful new friends and got to see many wonderful and inspiring films, thanks to you."
