Cinematography Faculty Vacancy Announcement

The School of Filmmaking of the North Carolina School of the Arts is accepting applications for a full-time faculty position in Cinematography. Review of applications will begin Feb 15, 2008 and continue until the position is filled. The appointment begins September 1, 2008.

NCSA, one of the 16 constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina, is the first state-supported arts conservatory in the United States. Located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, NCSA has a strong commitment to and a distinguished reputation for preparing gifted students for professional lives in the entertainment industry. The resident faculty is made up of artists who have distinguished careers in the profession and who are encouraged to continue their professional activities and relationships while employed at the school. The faculty works in a collaborative environment with a low student to faculty ratio.

Established in 1993, the School of Filmmaking combines rigorous professional training with unparalleled facilities, equipment and resources. The program’s mission is to train talented students for professional careers in the film and television industries and stresses the collaborative nature of filmmaking in a rigorous conservatory atmosphere. The School of Filmmaking's goal is to produce the "complete" filmmaker – a storyteller of unusual vision who knows how to use and value the components of the filmmaking arts. The School of Filmmaking offers a BFA in Animation, Art Direction, Cinematography, Directing, Editing & Sound, Producing, and Screenwriting and an MFA in Film Music Composition.

Qualifications

  • Professional cinematography credits in the feature, television, or documentary fields.
  • Teaching/lecturing experience.
  • MFA or MA with 18 credit hours in a related field or an equivalent combination of education, teaching and professional experience.
  • Experience with emerging and industry standard digital technologies, including high definition, digital intermediates, color timing, Avid, Final Cut Pro, After Effects, and other visual effects software is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate cinematography courses including, but not limited to, Year One Production, Cinematography Workshops, Year Two Production, Intermediate Cinematography, Year Three Production, Advanced Cinematography, Production Thesis and Tutorial, and elective courses.
  • Act as academic advisor to Year One and Year Two students and as mentor to Year 3 and Year 4 students within the Cinematography discipline.
  • Visit sets on a regular basis to supervise student production.
  • Evaluate his/her students on a regular basis and participate in the student continuation process at the end of the academic year.
  • Attend monthly Faculty meetings, weekly Production meetings, and any other meetings deemed necessary.
  • Assist in the admissions process by interviewing prospective students during on-campus interview dates. The faculty member may also be asked to travel for off-site prospective student interviews.
  • Participate in student recruitment by traveling to high schools to speak about our program.
  • Participate on NCSA and School of Filmmaking committees as needed.
  • Host Guest Artists at the request of the Dean.
  • Participate during Intensive Arts.
  • Abide by and support all School of Filmmaking policies and procedures as outlined in the School of Filmmaking Student Handbook and Safety Handbook.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean.
