As many of you may already know, the Canon XL2 was announced this week in New York, openly showcasing 10 fully operational cameras for attendees to toy around with at the DV Expo.

Appeasing the demands of every enthusiast eager to get their hands on the long anticipated successor to the XL1, everyone who picked up the camera was able to figure out for themselves what makes the new camera better than its' long lived predecessor.

The XL2 is welcomed to mixed reviews and a string of comparisons to the infamous DVX100, which shows Canon's continued commitment to users requests, and attention to its' competitors. The release of this camera may also cause a premature rift in the HDV expectancy time table, making it difficult to gauge when they might release an HDV model, but this does leave more time for Canon to secure an even better camera for the future.

Despite the criticality directed towards the camera for lacking HDV, Canon has done their consumers a favor by withholding the implementation of HDV until the applications for such a format have settled and are widely accessible.

Breathing new life into the XL series, Canon made great improvements internally and externally over the previous model. 3 different shooting modes (24P, 30P, and 60i), true 16:9 aspect ratio, TFT screen, XLR ports, reconstructed magnesium alloy body, and a newly built 20x zoom L series professional lens are just a few of the highlights for this new open bodied beauty. Selective shipping of the XL2 is scheduled to start in August, and general shipping is scheduled for September.
