Wings Over Indiana, a special one-hour edition of the science series, Indiana Expeditions, has received three Emmy nominations from the Lower Great Lakes Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The video, a collaboration between producer WFYI Productions, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, and the Academy of Model Aeronautics, was made possible by a NASA grant.

Wings Over Indiana shows how model aircraft are used in the development of full-scale aircraft. The show will profile astronauts and aviators of all ages. Through videography and the use of miniature cameras, viewers are placed in the cockpits of airplanes, on the wingtips of gliders, and aboard model aircraft to experience the thrill of flight.

The video is hosted by Rick Crosslin, one of Indiana's most honored and respected science teachers. He has received numerous awards recognizing him as an outstanding classroom teacher. Crosslin traveled across the state and to the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center in California, to look at Indiana’s connections to the history and science of aviation. WFYI’s Indiana Expeditions videos use the concept of exploration to show how science impacts our everyday lives.

The documentary is part of the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis’ Curious Scientific Investigators: Flight Adventures initiative, which is funded through a NASA grant. AMA’s FPG 9s, which were developed to provide an inexpensive aviation learning tool, are featured in the video. These devices and other learning tools designed by the Academy of Model Aeronautics Education department have been implemented as part of the AMA’s strategic plan to promote education through aviation. AMA’s exciting new programs include AMA Flight School, an online educational experience, and the new mobile model aviation experience: a traveling education simulator and video display vehicle.

The three Emmy nominations include Health/Science: Program or Special; Crafts: Editor or Program; and Crafts: Technical Achievement. The 44th Annual Emmy Awards Gala will be held June 1, 2013 in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Academy of Model Aeronautics, founded in 1936, continues to be devoted to national airspace safety. It serves as the nation’s collective voice for approximately 154,000 modelers in 2,400 clubs in the United States and Puerto Rico. Headquartered in Muncie IN, AMA is a membership organization representing those who fly model aircraft for recreation and educational purposes.
