Santa Fe University of Art and Design (SFUAD) students and faculty members will travel by Gibson Guitar tour bus from Santa Fe to Los Angeles April 13–18 to film behind-the-scenes footage of the road to the 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Members of the superstar group Public Enemy, including bassist and SFUAD artist-in-residence Brian Hardgroove, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE on April 18. Hardgroove will travel with the students from Santa Fe to Los Angeles, serving as the key subject of the students’ documentary.

The Gibson bus will make its first stop at the SFUAD campus from noon to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, in conjunction with the university’s Kachina Quadstock music event. High school students can meet Hardgroove, SFUAD department chairs and other faculty members, who will be offering one-on-one portfolio reviews and auditions.

Two current SFUAD film students, Jozelle Anderson (’13) and Matthew Krekeler (’16), photography student Shayla Blatchford (’13), as well as Hardgroove, SFUAD’s director of photography David Scheinbaum, Film School chair Chris Eyre, Film School associate chair Paula Amanda, and Film School faculty members David Busse and Belle Allen, will then travel to Los Angeles on the Gibson tour bus. The students and faculty members will document the journey through a series of interviews and behind-the-scenes footage with Hardgroove.

“Brian’s invitation to our students to experience his once-in-a-lifetime achievement is priceless,” said Eyre. “Music and film go together like sunshine and swimming. I want our students to see the complete artistic and professional efforts behind a musician of Brian’s caliber and what it takes to make it to that stage.”

Upon reaching Los Angeles, the SFUAD team will first stop at the Gibson Guitar Showroom on April 16, where, from 2 to 5 p.m., SFUAD will conduct student portfolio reviews and auditions, joined by SFUAD Art Department chair Linda Swanson. Two Public Enemy documentaries will also be screened in the showroom, including the BBC-produced Prophets of Rage (2011) and Public Enemy: Welcome to the Terrordome (2007).

On the following day, April 17, Hardgroove will host a special event at the showroom, which the students will document through film and photography. Beginning at 9:30 a.m., Public Enemy DJs Johnny Juice and DJ Lord will spin, followed by a discussion titled “What Is Rock & Roll?” from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., featuring Public Enemy’s Chuck D and recording legends Eddie Kramer, Jack Douglas, Doug Pinnick and Stewart Copeland.
