StudentFilmmakers.com chats with Shreya Doshi of Skinit, Inc. about the "Skinit Spotlight Challenge". Doshi shares tips for contestants and talks about the concept behind the Skinit's unique video contest.

What inspired the concept for the "Skinit Spotlight Challenge"commercial video contest?

Shreya Doshi: Video contests are on the rise and they give us a unique way to engage with our customers. We believe our products speak to individuality and personalization, so we’re hoping a contest that lets the individual portray and present our brand in their own way really resonates with our audience. This is our chance to see how the public views Skinit and what our brand and products mean to our customers from their perspective. We’re looking forward to seeing a lot of great entries.

What are some elements that could make really strong and solid entries? Any inside tips?

Shreya Doshi: We ran a commercial contest last year as well and I think the top entries were very original and very creative. It was impressive to see the result of endless imagination coming together with creative talent around our brand. Some submissions were humorous while others were more subtle, but all the ads that stood out were original and took on Skinit from a new angle. It doesn’t have to be this revolutionary new idea either – we saw some very simple ideas translate into great ads. A little extra creative thought can definitely go a long way to separate your entry from the rest of the competition. You can checkout last year’s winners on our YouTube page: www.youtube.com/skinittv.

New things in relation to the usage of mobile phones for film and video making have been becoming more and more popular. Could you comment on this?

Shreya Doshi: Not being of the film-world myself, I can’t speak to the full impact this new trend may be having. But I do think it’s great that mobile cameras give easier access to filming tools for the everyday filmmaker. At least the casual videographer won’t have to spend a ton of money on a camcorder to pursue his hobby. Or maybe someone will discover a hobby for film because he starts playing around with mobile cameras! And of course, the bonus footage folks are able to capture more spontaneously on their phones makes for some of the best YouTube videos I’ve seen!

In what ways are you hoping your contest will encourage and inspire film and video makers and creative communities?

Shreya Doshi: Like I said earlier, I do feel that our products speak to self-expression – so I hope this contest lends itself to just that. Film and video is also a means of self-expression so hopefully this contest will let filmmakers connect with our brand and translate nicely when they combine their video passions with creative expression.
