StudentFilmmakers.com (www.studentfilmmakers.com), the #1 Educational Resource for Film and Video Makers, successfully hosted and presented their Shooting in 3D Workshop with Julian Chojnacki, SOC on Saturday, July 11, 2009. Over forty attendees eagerly arrived at the StudentFilmmakers Magazine headquarters in New York City to listen, ask questions, and learn from A-List Camera Operator Julian Chojnacki, SOC, who recently shot the new, soon-to-be-released in August 2009, 3D feature film, “The Final Destination.” Chojnacki kept the workshop interactive, welcoming questions from the workshop attendees as he spoke about 3D technology, 3D techniques, and shooting key scenes for “The Final Destination.”

Chojnacki covered many aspects of 3D technology, including how we see in 3D and how the camera reproduces the image.  He also covered the various components of the Cameron/Pace 3D camera system, challenges of shooting in 3D, and alternations and limitations in shooting.  Julian presented several production stills of filming on set and underwater.  He also showed short video clips of the camera setup while filming “The Final Destination” (2009) in 3D.

Current Drexel University student and workshop attendee Tim Buttner, appreciated Julian’s approach of breaking down the complexities of filming in 3D. “Julian was an unbelievable presenter, who was very down to earth in his presentation while very knowledgeable about what he was discussing. He made us feel like equals, which earned our respect so that we took his experiences with civility and honor.”

Fellow workshop attendee Remy Medranda, states that this event had a huge impact on him and his career. “The workshop was fantastic! Not only was it informative and beyond my expectations, but it gave me the chance to network with true industry professionals who were both really nice, down to earth, and easy to talk to.”

Julian also appreciated being able to share his work experience with other film professionals and aspiring filmmakers. "The workshop was as much of a learning experience for me, as it was to all that attended. Truly exhilarating!"

An unexpected surprise for the attendees was the guest appearance of David R. Ellis, director of“The Final Destination” (2009) in 3D andThe Final Destination 2” (2003), who graciously answered questions from the audience about working on the set of these films.

For Medranda, the chance to meet both Julian and David was a huge opportunity. “I was talking to David after the seminar was over, and he graciously invited me to his set he was working on in Brooklyn to watch him at work. I must say this really made my day!”

One unique aspect of this event included the audiovisual recording of the workshop. Filmmaker and Sound Specialist for Professional Sound Services Matt Kraus assisted in this process.

Founder and CEO of Welch Integrated, Inc. and StudentFilmmakers.com Kim Welch believes this is a great way for filmmakers who were unable to attend the event to still benefit from the material covered in the workshop. “We have many film and video makers in our network both nationally and internationally that are too far away to attend the workshop in person. By audio visually recording our workshop with Julian, these individuals can still gain knowledge and skills through watching the DVD.”

Another perk Welch organized was the raffle of two door prizes, which were provided by workshop sponsors.  Brandon Lori, a student at the School of Visual Arts in New York City won the Sachtler System FSB 2 MD tripod system from Camera Dynamics (valued at over $900). Steve Nordhauser from Troy, NY won the Chimera Triolet Light, Model #9930, (valued at $325).

Welch was extremely impressed by Julian and David’s ability to effectively connect with the audience and their eagerness to offer insight and advice to workshop attendees. “It was very inspiring for me to hear the positive response about the workshop. I’m looking forward to holding more of these educational events.”

Fans of Chojnacki will be pleased to hear that he is eager to do another workshop in the future! "I'm looking forward to lecturing at the StudentFilmmakers Magazine [headquarters] again."
