The workflow to deliver HD captions for TV broadcast is now easier and more cost effective thanks to Blackmagic Design's HyperDeck and CPC's MacCaption software. This new workflow allows Blackmagic Design users that edit in Apple ProRes or Avid DnxHD to create HD closed captions for TV delivery. In addition, the HyperDeck can record HD caption data that can be easily repurposed for Internet delivery using MacCaption software. This allows users to comply with new FCC Internet caption regulations.

Blackmagic Design helped make this innovation possible by releasing a software update that supports the .MCC VANC file format that was developed by CPC.

On Display at the NAB Convention: This cost cutting solution will be demonstrated at CPC’s Booth #SL6024 at the NAB convention in Las Vegas, NV, April 8 – 11.

How it works

MacCaption software lets users create a .MCC data file from scratch. Users simply convert their existing caption files such as .SCC and .CAP into the .MCC HD encoded caption file. The HyperDeck device can read data from an MCC file and marry caption data with video during play-out via HD-SDI connection. Capture HD caption data and repurpose for the web HyperDeck Studio can also capture HD closed captions from an SDI video feed. Broadcasters can take advantage of this feature when trying to convert TV closed captioning to SMPTE 2052 web closed captioning data.

"To capture HD captions, it's as simple as connecting a hard drive to the HyperDeck and pressing record," said Jason Livingston, product manager of MacCaption software.

Once HyperDeck is finished recording HD closed captioned video, a resulting .MCC caption file will be found in the hard drive. This .MCC can then be opened, edited and repurposed to any web or TV caption format using CPC MacCaption.

Support for multiple video frame rates

Because the MCC file format supports all standard video frame rates, Blackmagic Design HyperDeck owners can add closed captions to HD video files in 720P 59.94,1080i 29.97, and 1080 23.98 fps video files using a .MCC file.

"I'm able to free up my HD decks in the machine room when working with captioning. HyperDeck is saving my deck record/playback heads," said Rodney Hammond of Video Labs (www.videolabs.net) a leading media distribution and post production company in the Washington, D.C. area.
