Music and the Moving Image- Exploring the Diversity of Media in a Multicultural Center

(New York, NY) For all those cinema-goers whose interests in film music tend towards the scholarly, the Music and the Moving Image Conference is a must-visit. Held over a weekend every spring at the New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, the conference is a forum where researchers from all over the world gather to conduct lectures and panels on their latest work.

Though only in its third year, the conference has already demonstrated its tremendous vibrancy through its presentations which make up a veritable intellectual smorgasbord. Faculty members from various departments and students alike showcase their investigations on film music from the earliest silent films to the latest blockbusters in our theaters and living rooms through disciplinary prisms including musicology, sociology, politics, history, and cultural studies. In keeping with its technological spirit, the conference offers lecture viewing through live streaming for those who cannot physically attend.

As its name implies, the conference does not limit itself to film music, but explores other media including television and video games, an especially fascinating topic given the interactive nature of the format. Additional information and admission ($185 general and $85 for students) can be found on the Steinhardt School website.

As well as an annual conference, the University of Illinois Press produces an electronic journal also titled Music and the Moving Image issued three times a year and co-edited by Gillian Anderson and Ron Sadoff. Yearly subscription is available for individuals ($30.00, $21.00 for members of the Film Music Society) and institutions ($70.00).
