The Film Society of Lincoln Center will showcase a summertime selection of films based on the works of William Shakespeare with “The Bard Goes Global: Shakespeare on the International Screen,” a 12-day, 18-film series running July 15-26 at the Walter Reade Theater in New York City.
The films range from a Mumbai gangster-style Macbeth (Maqbool) to three renditions of Hamlet, two of which re-imagine the tragedy of the Prince of Denmark as a tale of corporate corruption. Directors represented include Orson Welles, Laurence Olivier, Akira Kurosawa, Aki Kaurismäki, Derek Jarman, Roman Polanski, Julie Taymor and Baz Luhrmann. Taymor will appear in person at a screening of Titus on July 23.
