IBC honours 80 years of innovation.

The International Honour for Excellence, the highest honour IBC bestows, goes this year to NHK's Science and Technical Research Laboratories (STRL). Founded in 1930, the R&D arm of the Japanese national broadcaster has been responsible for many of the dramatic developments in television. STRL's achievements have transformed our industry worldwide.

The labs achieved trial television broadcasts in 1939 and colour television in 1960. In 1964 it started work on HD, first by developing methods to determine the limits of human perception. That work continues to this day, and underpins Super Hi-Vision, the ultra high resolution television system that is being targeted for practical broadcast implementation around 2020.

Other landmark developments led by engineers from STRL include the plasma display and satellite broadcasting.

Masayuki Matsumoto, the President of NHK, said “With a firm belief that broadcasting is a form of culture founded on technology, NHK will continue to commit itself to drawing on the latest achievements to create a new broadcasting culture. It is a great honour for us at NHK to receive this prestigious award.”
