Maybe your friends call you a social media nerd. Maybe you’re social media savvy but need to hone your skills. Maybe you don’t know the difference between a tweet, hashtag or avatar. No matter your skill level, the Excellence in Journalism conference (Aug. 24-26 in sunny Southern California) is for you!

Pre-conference workshop:

“The Business of Me” - Mark Luckie, Twitter’s manager of journalism and news, will talk about how to brand and market yourself as a journalist.

Breakout sessions:

“Digging Deeper with Social Media” - Doug Haddix, director of the Kiplinger Program in Public Affairs Journalism at the Ohio State University, will give tips on how to ramp up your social media use.

“15 Social Media Ideas Newsroom Leaders Can’t Live Without” - Kim Wilson, founder of SocialNewsDesk, will enlighten you with creative social media initiatives in the newsroom.

“Our Digital Shadows: Journalists and Online Reputation” - Marie K. Shanahan, assistant professor at University of Connecticut, and PaShon Mann, director of talent acquisition at Gannett Co., will show you how to look credible and professional online.

“Write this Workshop” - Valerie Hyman, president of News & Management Training, will teach you the art of powerful digital writing and design.

“Curation Station: Effective Use of Social Tools for Breaking and Big-Issue Reporting”Kelly Fincham, assistant professor at Hofstra University, and Kim Bui, social media and outreach at KPCC, will explain how to strategize important news by curating social media output with tools such as Storify and RebelMouse.

“Facebook Usage Survey”Steve Schwaid, VP of Digital Strategies at Crawford, Johnson and Northcott, and Dana Neves, VP of News at WFSB and WFSB.Com, will share results of research projects showing how consumers are using Facebook today.
