(Provo, Utah) Kimber Crandall, a former BYU broadcast journalism student, received a New York Emmy Award, the most coveted peer-recognition symbol of distinction in television, for her story, “Sauce on the Run.”

Crandall, a reporter for News 12 Connecticut, was on the scene to cover the story of a delivery truck that spilled two-thousand pounds of Frank's Hot Sauce all over the street as police and hazmat crews responded to clean up the mess. “People were stopping on the street and talking about it for days and I think that’s the reason why the judges found it interesting and awarded it the Emmy,” Crandall said. “Most people would have just done a short story on it, but we took it one step further.”

Crandall attributed her success in covering the story to what she learned from her classes at BYU. “I feel like my experience at BYU prepared me to take on stories that are different and figure out ways to make them my own,” she said. “BYU’s Daily News prepared me well to work in an industry that is so fast paced.”

Dr. Dale Cressman, associate chair of undergraduate studies in the Department of Communications at BYU, and one of Crandall’s former professors, described her as an extraordinary student. “Crandall just knew what she wanted to do,” he said. “She had a ‘go big or go home’ attitude that has served her well. We are very proud of her,” said Cressman.

Crandall thanked her BYU professors for their help in preparing her for where she is today. “I feel really blessed that I’ve had the opportunity to work and do what I’ve dreamed of doing since I was a little girl,” she said. “I am very thankful that even in this economy I have a job and am able to live my dream.”

The New York Emmy is presented each year by the New York Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. NY NATAS is the preeminent membership organization serving all media professionals in the television industry.
