(Washington) Divorce, custody and child support: Three issues that are always big in the news are about to get even bigger -- but with a twist. A powerful new film tells another, rarely heard, side of the story.

Renowned filmmaker Janks Morton tackles controversial family court issues head-on in a moving documentary titled Guilty Until Proven Innocent (GUPI- www.gupifilm.com), making its theatrical debut on July 26, 2011, at 8:00p.m. EDT, at the Avalon Theater in Washington, D.C.

"Through gripping first-hand accounts Guilty Until Proven Innocent relays what's really going on in family court. Millions of parents and children are directly impacted by court and agency rulings. The routine and unnecessary separation of children from a parent is creating a nation of fatherless kids. Society can no longer ignore the human and financial costs of family breakdown. Clearly the best interest of children is not being served. Many of these problems are readily correctable," said Michael McCormick, executive director of the American Coalition for Fathers and Children (ACFC www.acfc.org)

The documentary and following discussion seek to dispel pervasive damaging stereotypes, address audience comments, and offer viewpoints and research to back up positive solutions to controversial issues. Questions to be explored include:

  • Are there more fathers of divorce or separation who want to support their children emotionally and financially, or are there more dads who abandon their children and walk away willfully and uncaringly without looking back?
  • How do fathers really feel about their children?
  • Should two, good, fit parents, considering divorce or separation, stay together for the children's sake?
  • What do you think?

Attend the premier and share your opinion of Guilty Until Proven Innocent as the filmmakers and panel shed new light on the answers to these and other important questions.
