(Burbank, California) Leslie Neale's documentary, "Unlikely Friends", is the 2011 recipient of the Roy W. Dean Los Angeles Grant of which Edgewise Media is a major sponsor.  The Roy W. Dean Grant helps filmmakers get funding, services, and products to complete their projects.  Edgewise Media's donation will help Leslie acquire video tape, expendables, and more to help make her project a reality.

"Unlikely Friends" explores how the power of forgiveness between victim and perpetrator can affect change within the criminal justice system by paving roads to reconciliation and rehabilitation.    The documentary shows victims of horrific crimes seeking forgiveness out of a need to heal.  Through these efforts, they come to recognize their human connection to the perpetrator of the crime, which leads to friendship, forgiveness, and an unfathomable connection.

For nearly 20 years, the Roy W. Dean Grant has funded films that are "unique and make a contribution to society".   Founder Carole Dean looks for "compelling stories about little known subjects, historical films and films that touch hearts. We like films that expose and bring important information to light, we like films on little known people when there is a good story. We are story-tellers and that is the main criteria for entering and winning our grants, stories that can change and stories that can heal and enrich our lives."

Edgewise Media has been a proud sponsor to the Roy W. Dean Grant for 11 years.  During that time, they have donated $20,000 to the winners of the grant.   This has helped create a legacy of excellent documentaries.  Some of the most recent winners include:

The Winding Stream - Beth Harrison, Producer/Director - a 90-minute documentary shot in High Definition, it tells the epic story of Johnny Cash, June Carter musical family. The film is punctuated with studio performances by celebrated roots music practitioners like Johnny and June Carter Cash, George Jones, Rosanne Cash, Sheryl Crow, and Kris Kristofferson. The film illuminates the foundation-forming history of this multi-generational musical family. www.thewindingstream.com

Heist: Who Ripped Off Our Economy and How to Make it Right - Donald Goldmacher, Producer, Frances Causey, Producer - Heist tells the hidden story of the systemic, multifaceted corporate attack that, starting in the 1970s, transformed America's well-regulated economy into a battlefield littered with foreclosed homes, runaway jobs, and broken dreams.
