(London, United Kingdom) The Taipei Representative Office in the UK and the White Rose East Asia Centre (WREAC), University of Leeds, are proud to launch their Documentary Festival: Taiwan Study Day, which will take place on 13th November 2010 at the University of Leeds.

Taiwan has a rich cultural heritage. Documentary is a highly effective and unique method to approach the study of Taiwan. Its accessibility and first-hand perspective provide an excellent entry point for British audiences who have little or no background in Taiwan Studies.

Phase I of the festival took place in November 2009, triggering lively debate and greatly increasing interest in the event. Phase II of the festival in November 2010 aims to widen participation and to facilitate further discussions on relevant topics. The three documentaries chosen for Phase II all concern ‘children in contemporary Taiwan.’ These films include: “Jump! Boys,” “The Journal of an Elementary School Student Teacher,” and “Elephant Boy and Robo Girl.” The themes covered include the education system, social welfare and youth cultures. The films stimulate new understanding on these issues in Taiwan in an engaging and entertaining way.

Post-screening Q&As and panel discussions will offer greater depth and context to the Study Day, and will help participants to appreciate further the value of the documentary medium and to gain insight into Taiwan.
