Columbia University School of the Arts Film alumnus Mauro Mueller ('13 SOA) has been awarded the Bronze Medal at the 2013 Student Academy Awards in the highly competitive Narrative category. Mauro's winning film, Un Mundo Para Raul (A World for Raul) tells the story of 13-year-old Raul and depicts the game of power and pride that begins when he is asked to entertain the local landowner's son.

The Student Academy Awards is a national student film competition conducted by the Academy. Each year, over 500 entrants from colleges and universities all over the United States compete for awards and cash grants. With this prize the Academy Foundation seeks to encourage this country's most promising new filmmakers. Past winners have included Spike Lee, Trey Parker, Bob Saget and Oscar winners John Lasseter and Robert Zemckis.

The presentation of the award took place in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles. In his acceptance speech, Mueller was sure to tell the capacity audience how much his training and mentorship at CU helped to bolster his career. “I made the film at Columbia University,” he said, “and I am indebted to the university and to all the mentors, to all the professors I had. I really felt that I got all the tools I need to now do this transition into professional film making.”

This is Columbia's third medal in this category in the last three years.  Shawn Wines ('12 SOA) won Silver in 2011 with his film “High Maintenance” and Mark Raso ('12 SOA) won gold in 2012 with his film“Under.”
