The screenplays of four Columbia Film alumni or students have been selected for the 2012 Black List. The Black List began in 2005 as a survey of film executives about their favorite scripts which hadn't been turned into features. Since then, over 200 Black List screenplays have been made as feature films. Those films have been nominated for 148 Academy Awards, and have won 25, including Best Pictures Slumdog Millionaire and The King's Speech and five of the last ten screenwriting Oscars.

This year Harry Kellerman ('07 SOA), Shane Atkinson (5th year Screenwriting), Jack Paglen ('06 SOA) and Roberto Bentivegna ('10 SOA) were all named to the Black List for their screenplays. Murder of a Cat by Christian Magalhaes ('10) and Robert Snow ('10) was named to the Black List in 2010 and is now in pre-production. Chris Galletta's ('10 SOA) script Toy's House also appeared on the Black List recently—the film, now in post-production, was selected for the U.S. Dramatic Competition at Sundance 2013.
