CD Baby Releases Infographic: Shows Strong Growth in Independent Music Revenues

(Portland, OR) -- While major labels keep seeing red and the media continues to spread their doomsday analyses, CD Baby, the world’s leading distributor of independent music showed impressive growth in 2011. They released last year’s sales and submission stats today as an infographic (available here).
The infographic shows growth in almost every aspect of CD Baby’s distribution model: 13.3% growth in revenue paid to artists, 20.9% growth in new title submissions, and 21.7% growth in the total number of songs distributed via CD Baby. While physical CD sales were down slightly from 2010 (no big surprise there!), the stats prove that CD sales overall are still a vital part of a successful independent album release.
"It’s clear from our 2011 numbers that these are promising times for independent artists,” says CD Baby president Brian Felsen. “Not only is the sky NOT falling; we’re paying MORE to artists than ever before! And we’ve continued to develop new tools and programs so that the musicians who work with CD Baby can earn even more money as their careers progress.”
The new tools and programs Felsen refers to are CD Baby's Music Store Widget, the MusicStore for Facebook app (both launched in 2011), and the CD Baby Sync Licensing program. The Sycn licensing program was announced last month and it allows artists to earn licensing revenue from traditional sync placements in TV, film, video games, and YouTube.
