Announcing the Chouinard Foundation Library

By StudentFilmmakers.com
posted Jan 5, 2012, 15:22

(Los Angeles, CA) In coordination with Pacific Standard Time, the Chouinard Foundation presents a massive, interactive online library covering the Chouinard Foundation's efforts over the last 12 years - dedicated to strengthening the legacy of the original Chouinard Art Institute, 1921-1972 - one of the most renowned art schools in history.

Many artists celebrated in Pacific Standard Time were either Chouinard students, teachers or both. Chouinard was the ground-zero creative hub in all Westcoast art movements from 1921-1972, including Disney's Original Animators (Marc Davis, Chuck Jones, et.al.), The California Watercolor School (Millard Sheets, Phil Dike, Phil Paradise, et.al.), Syncromism (Stanton MacDonald Wright), Westcoast Abstraction (Matsumi Kanemitsu, Hans Burkhardt, Emerson Woelffer, Richards Ruben, et.al.), Architecture (Richard Neutra, Rudolph Schindler, et. al.), Muralism (David Alfaro Siqueiros, Millard Sheets, Philip Guston, et.al.), Costume Design (Edith Head, Bonnie Cashin, Theadora Van Runkle, et.al.), Design (Lou Danziger, et.al.), Hard Eedge Painting (Frederick Hammersley, Lorser Feitelson, et.al.), Ferus / Westcoast Pop (John Altoon, Llyn Foulkes, Ed Ruscha, Larry Bell, Ken Price, Billy Al Bengston, John Baldessari, et.al.), Ceramics (Elsa Rady, Jun Kaneko, Otto Heino, Peter Shire, Ralph Bacerra, et.al.), Film (Terry Gilliam, et.al.), Photography (Edmund Teske), Surf/Skate/Rock (John Van Hamersveld, Jim Ganzer, Rick Griffin, Ivan Hosoi, Boyd Elder, et.al.), Light And Space (Robert Irwin, Doug Wheeler, et.al.), Conceptualism (Jack Goldstein, Terry Allen, Al Ruppersberg, et.al.) and Graffiti (Chaz Bojorquez).

In the Chouinard Foundation Library you will see:

* Filmed interviews with Llyn Foulkes, Ed Ruscha, Mary Corse, Frederick Hammersley, Mel Edwards and others.
* Nelbert Chouinard essay by artist/writer Mary Anna Pomonis.
* Updates on the soon-to-be-released feature-length documentary featuring Ed Ruscha, Theadora Van Runkle, Llyn Foulkes, Larry Bell, Norton Wisdom and many others, to be submitted to film festivals worldwide in 2012.
* The Chouinard House and the founding of the Chouinard Foundation by Robert Perine and Dave Tourje in 1999.
* How and why the Chouinard Art Institute was shut down in 1972 and merged into Cal Arts.
* The Siqueiros Mural Discovery, "Street Meeting," with the Emmy-nominated KCET documentary and other press.
* All the L.A. Times articles chronicling the Chouinard Foundation's history written by Suzanne Muchnic and other notable writers.
* Articles and essays by renowned writers David Ebony, Peter Clothier, Gerald Nordland and others.
* Interactive comment section allowing anyone to post their antecdotes and recollections of Chouinard, thus creating an expanding, living history.
* An expanding online directory of Chouinard artists and links.
* The history of the Chouinard Foundation's past efforts in education - the art school in South Pasadena (2002-2006) and the partnership with the City of LA Recreation and Parks (2006-2009).

And much more...
